Movie bug hits OSU in a big way
STILLWATER, Okla. – Classic B-movies and crunchy munchies will make for a unique night out Nov. 1, when Oklahoma State University’s ENTO 2003 class throws open the doors to the public for Bug Movie Night.
The fun and food will take place 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in 106 Noble Research Center, north of the Edmon Low Library. There is no cost to attend. Any and all bugs will be provided, also free of charge.
We’re talking mutant, Cold War era, holocaust-comes-a-calling giant bugs in classic black-and-white that thrilled, chilled and mostly just amused audiences of the Atomic Age, served with arthropod-based munchies guaranteed to tickle the taste buds of the adventuresome movie-goer.
Arthropods, of course, are invertebrates having a segmented body, jointed limbs and a mineralized chitinous shell covering. Talk about being yummy for the tummy. What? Have you never heard of lobster, shrimp or crabs?
“People can get marine arthropod cuisine from a great many fine restaurants, so we’re going to be offering some less well-known, non-marine arthropod dishes,” said Carmen Greenwood, assistant professor of entomology with OSU’s Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
Seating will be on a first-come, first-seated basis. The auditorium has seats for 217 individuals. Approximately 80 of the seats are reserved for ENTO 2003 students and their guests.
“The Sanborn Entomology Club is hosting the event,” Greenwood said. “The festivities will include two science-fiction bug classics: The 1954 movie Them! and Starship Troopers from 1997.”
Greenwood said the second feature is rated R and is probably better suited for an adult audience, which is why it is being shown later.
“It includes a little human nudity, as well as bug nudity, but nobody seems to be offended by that,” Greenwood said. “There is also quite a bit of action-movie carnage as the good guys take on the bad guys. Depending on your love of bugs, we’ll let you decide who is who.”
Greenwood said movie-goers can come to both or either of the films as they will be shown back-to-back, with the arthropod-based food served during intermission. The second feature will begin at approximately 8:30 p.m.
