4-H Shotgun Shooting Sports mandatory training class March 22

STILLWATER, Okla. – Payne County youth who are at least 10 years old and have an interest in shotgun shooting sports should make plans to attend the mandatory six-hour training class for the Payne County 4-H Shooting Sports shotgun program.

The 4-H Shooting Sports program covers three disciplines, including archery, air rifle and shotgun. The mandatory six-hour initial 4-H Shotgun Shooting Sports training class is slated March 22  from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Payne County Fairgrounds for those interested in participating in the shotgun segment of the Shooting Sports program.

Richard Roach, who serves as one of the 4-H certified instructors for the Payne County Shotgun Shooting Sports program, said this meeting is geared toward youth and parents who have an interest in shotgun shooting safety and would like to participate in the shotgun program.

This course includes four hours of classroom instruction and two to three hours of range instruction focusing on the safe handling, transportation and storage of firearms, as well as the rules involved with range, clay target shooting and competition. Additional class scheduling will be discussed at this meeting.

The club received a nearly $4,000 grant in 2007 from the Friends of the NRA in order to purchase needed equipment for the continuation of the shotgun segment of the program and is hoping to receive an additional grant from Friends of the NRA in 2008. The shotgun segment of the Payne County 4-H Shooting Sports program has been realized and has continued to grow and expand through several generous grants from Friends of the NRA over the last three years.

“The Shotgun Shooting Sports segment of this program introduces the safe and responsible handling and use of firearms,” Roach said. “This discipline of the Shooting Sports program teaches safety, concentration, self-discipline, self-confidence, goal-setting, decision making and courtesy as the youth learn basic skills associated with handling a shotgun and build toward more advanced activities.”
