Native American horticulture is focus of upcoming workshop
STILLWATER, Okla. – Individuals who are interested in Native American horticulture should plan to attend an educational one-day conference at Oklahoma State University’s Botanical Garden and Arboretum Aug. 21, beginning at 8:25 a.m. OBGA is located at 3425 W. Virginia.
Mike Schnelle, Extension ornamental floriculture specialist, said professionals from OSU, as well as industry specialists, will be on hand to share information during this educational workshop.
“We’ve got a great conference planned and we’re offering participants the opportunity to take home a lot of valuable information,” Schnelle said. “The informational workshops are geared toward a wide variety of gardening enthusiasts.”
Fred Schneider, Cleveland County Master Gardener and professor emeritus in anthropology at the University of North Dakota, will be on hand to provide information regarding traditional Native American gardening in the North Plains.
Pat Standingbear, a horticulturist from Tulsa, will share with the group information about practical products that come from Native American plants. In addition, Ron Tyrl, OSU botany professor at OSU, will provide interesting information about extracting dyes from various plants.
Other topics that will be covered include “Osage Pre-Columbian Gardening,” “Native American Garden” and “People Weren’t the Only Things Lost During Removal: The Loss of Southeast Corn Varieties.”
Registration is $55 per person and must be postmarked by Aug. 13. OBGA members, Extension educators and Master Gardeners may register for $40. Registration is $80 after Aug. 13.
