Laverne native named Top Ten OSU Ag Senior
STILLWATER, Okla. – Travis Jett, a 2003 graduate of Laverne High School, has been named a Top Ten Graduating Ag Senior by Oklahoma State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
He was officially recognized during April 4 ceremonies in which CASNR officials presented $434,100 in scholarships and awards to many of the college’s best and brightest, part of $967,075 in scholarships that CASNR and its academic departments will present to OSU agriculture students for the 2008-2009 school year.
Jett was also named a Dean Fred LeCrone Senior Leadership Award recipient, one of only five such honors presented.
The son of Laverne’s Alan and Alyson Jett, he will graduate in May with a major in agribusiness.
“Initially, I thought college was four years for me,” said Jett, the outgoing president of OSU Ag Student Council. “But the greatest memories and most significant impact happened when I made it about everyone else.”
In addition to his CASNR honors, Jett was recently selected as one of only 16 students to receive the 2008 OSU Outstanding Senior Award this spring. He was also named one of 41 Seniors of Significance last fall by the OSU Alumni Association awards and selection committee.

His collegiate activities have included a number of officer position in OSU Ag Student Council, serving as an OSU Agricultural Alumni Association student representative and as chairman of 2007 Ag Roundup, and membership in the National Agri-Marketing Association and Collegiate Farm Bureau.
He served as keynote speaker at the Northwest Oklahoma Alliance Legislative Dinner addressing rural development in 2007.
Jett also currently is an officer of Blue Key Honor Fraternity, a member of OSU’s Campus Life Advisory Board and the OSU Student Government Association Speakers Board. Previous activities include involvement in the OSU Student Alumni Board, President’s Leadership Council and Orange Peel.
He has received numerous honors and awards while at OSU, including being named a Lew Wentz Leadership Scholar, President’s Distinguished Scholar, Glen Carrier Memorial Scholar and American FFA Degree winner.
Jett served as president of the National FFA Organization in 2005-2006 and as president of Oklahoma FFA Association in 2004-2005.
“The greatest lesson I have learned is the value and fulfillment that comes from investing in others,” he said. “Most of the ‘things’ that I accomplished will be forgotten by next year, but the investment I have made in people will live on. They will be the next leaders on campus, and hopefully they too will receive satisfaction from investing in others.”
The OSU Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources places a great emphasis on celebrating the accomplishments of students, said Ed Miller, DASNR associate dean of academic programs.
“Awards for leadership and academic performance and the presentation of scholarships build pride in our students and their families, the faculty, donors and other supporters of the college and the division as a whole,” he said.
DASNR is comprised of the college and two statewide agencies: the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station system and the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service.
“The exceptional amount of scholarship support we are able to award students to further their education would not be possible without the generosity of our many donors, who recognize the value of the division’s teaching, research and Extension programs,” Miller said.
The college provides 16 majors and more than 40 study options to students interested in pursuing a career in science, business, education, engineering, technology development, natural resources or communications. Prospective students can uncover and explore opportunities through CASNR at http://www.casnr.com on the Internet.
